Hurricane Sandy ripped through New Jersey from Friday, October 26, 2012 until Thursday, November 8, 2012 over a two week period. FEMA declared Sandy a major disaster on October 30, 2012 having left all kinds of devastation in it’s trail. Those impacted by the horrific storm. Livescience.com reported that Hurricane Sandy was a late-season post-tropical cyclone that swept through the Carribbean and up the East Coast of the U.S. Dozens of people were fatally injured and thousands left homeless. Millions suffered without power. The total damage from the storm is expected to reach in the billions of dollars. The latest death toll from Sandy as of November 1, 2012 was at least 149 people from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina, Canada, The Carribbean and Haiti. It began in the Carribbean with winds reaching up to 74mph and finally striking Atlantic City New Jersey when it reached 80mph winds. A full moon made tides 20 percent above normal leaving streets flooded, trees and powerlines down and the famous boardwalk ripped to shreds. People were left stranded in their homes waiting for rescue boats along the Jersey Shoreline. More than 80 homes were destroyed in one fire in Queens. Several other fires were started throughout the Greater New York area.
